Like a good boy, I had been regularly purchasing various Microsoft-for-the-Mac upgrades for a very long time. How long has it been? It's been so long that my first copy of Excel (1.0, in 1985) was free, because at the time I possessed registered copies of MS Multiplan and MS Chart. That's a long time by anyone's measure.

My most recent Excel upgrade prior to MS Office for the Mac 2001 was Excel 95; I took a bye on Office 98 principally because I've never been particularly fond of MS Word (even in the Mac versions that had worked reasonably well). For most of the fifteen years or so that I've been using Macs almost exclusively, my word processor of choice has been WriteNow: Lean, mean, full of most of the features that I need, still running on OS 9.2.2, and, regrettably, discontinued (abandoned would be a more appropriate term) several years ago.

However, with the ever-increasing hegemony of Windoze-based business networks, and with the fact that Excel 95 cannot run on a G4 Mac with OS 9.0 or newer, I bit the bullet and purchased this Office 2001 package. And, while I've now pretty much climbed its learning curve, the experience hasn't exactly been one that I'd write home about.

Here are a few nits I choose to pick (some small, some not so small):

* Somewhere between Excel 95 and Office 2001, Microsoft programmers seem to have lost track of the fact that Macs have both "Return" and "Enter" keys. (Windoze machines have no "Return" key.) The "Return" key no longer functions as it did, scrolling down one cell in an Excel spreadsheet; it now does precisely the same thing the "Enter" key does (which is limited to whatever one chooses from the "Preferences" menu). Not very bright!

* In like fashion, the MS programmers decided to reassign several of the common "Command" key functions (Fill Down, Fill Across, Insert, Delete, Clear, etc.) to the "Control" key, again in some ill-founded effort at "cross-platform"compatibility. (Imagine my surprise when I first went to insert a row or column, only to find that my selection was formatted in italics!) In the process, the ergonomic superiority of the Mac keyboard, requiring less "stretch" effort to activate these keyboard shortcuts, has now been sacrificed to the Bill Gates God of Uniformity. And Microsoft continues to place the Font menu on a toolbar, not as a Mac-standard menu. Not very bright!

* While tools have been added to the toolbox library, the ability to customize toolbars for one's own use has actually been reduced! And the tools don't always load consistently, suggesting some bugginess that requires a Microsoft patch or two, not yet available. And, unlike previous Excel upgrades in my experience, this one appears to provide no additional chart types. Not very bright!

* Word is incompatible with RamDoubler 9.0 (another patch still not available). But, for once, my newest (G4) Mac has more memory than RamDoubler can deal with. Nevertheless: Not very bright!

* Word files - as always - are bloated for reasons that have little to do with content or formatting. (As a comparison, a 25-page file, containing a few tables and some minor formatting, which occupies 91K of HD space as a WriteNow 4.0 file and 96K as a WordPerfect 3.5e file, occupies 194K as a Word 2001 file.) If not "Not very bright!", then "Why?"

* The ubiquitous Windoze paperclip "Advisor" has been transmogrified to a less-than-winsome "flex-toy Mac." Gimmee a break!

* Entourage is incompatible with Outlook or Outlook Express. Its inclusion is specious at best, and one wonders how many will use this module.

* Once again, as far as a database module is concerned, Mac users are left in the lurch. Access continues to be notable by its absence (not that it is every database user's "dream program"), and FoxPro has long been history as far as Microsoft support is concerned. Moreover, a Mac port of SQL is just a fantasy. And VisualBasic is only present in crippled form, to support the modules that are VB-capable.

There are a few (very few, I'm sad to say) gains:

* PowerPoint works fine. But I have little need for it, save for the odd PP file that gets attached to my e-mail thanks to some chain letter or other.

* The modules run acceptably fast. But I think this has as much or more to do with G4 speed and available RAM as it does to "tight" coding by software engineers.

* Word works acceptably well (but not particularly great) as a platform for HTML coding.

* I've got the cross-platform compatibility that my business-related activities require.

For those G4 users needing a single module but not needing "full" cross-platform compatibility for other applications, my advice is to limit yourselves to just the Office 2001 module (saving some bucks), hang on to your WriteNow 4.0 program (it'll run just fine on OS 9.x G4's) or download a free copy of WordPerfect 3.5e, take a bye on Entourage (Outlook Express works just fine, and is bundled free with Explorer), and, if you need a database program, there's always FileMaker Pro.

Summary: A "forced" upgrade for G4 Mac users who must use Excel. More steps backward than forward for those of us who prefer Macs but need the cross-platform compatibility. At best, three stars, and then only with the greatest of reluctance.

I've been using OpenOffice on my new MacBook Pro for about a month now. I was a lifelong PC user, and have been using Microsoft Office for at least 13 years. It's amazing how fully functional OpenOffice is. It's definitely on a par with MS Office in terms of functionality. Anyone who has used MS Office would have very little, if any, difficulty in switching over to Open Office. OpenOffice files can be saved in all of the standard MS Word, Excel, and Powerpoint formats, and can be opened by anyone using MS Office. OpenOffice automatically opens files saved by just about any previous version of MS Office without having to do anything special. And, considering that OpenOffice is essentially free (there's a very modest cost for the CD version purchased through Amazon), there's no reason why anyone should have to pay $200 or more for MS Office anymore. Purchased this unit because it seemed to fit my needs:

1) Size (fit my home office limited desk space)
2) Flexibility (able to work with windows and MAC OSX, portable)
3) Similar units from other manufacturers had relatively poor performance ratings.

I am running the IRIScan Pro 3 under MAC OSX 10.6.4 on an Intel iMac (vintage 2009).

While the unit cleared the first two hurdles well, the final criterion (performance) left much to be desired. So far, after installing all software, I have discovered the following:

* The software and unit crashed after scanning in four or more business cards.
* The software and unit crashed after scanning in two or more pages on an 8*10 document.

The software would capture no more than 1 business card or 1 page of text document, no matter how many attempts were made to scan additional cards / documents.

This may be user error, but I would rate myself at well above average in terms of "tech savvy." I have been a licensed HAM Radio op since 1978, and have built computers and transmitters, receivers and other devices from the ground up. I taught myself how to program computers using Fortran and BASIC in high school.

Despite all of this, I can't make this unit do what it is supposed to do. Using the document bulk feeder, the unit bombs out 90% of the time, telling me that there are no documents in the feeder. When I use the page feeder, the unit tends to grab my documents off-center and pull them in at angle. Significant portions of the page or document wind up being cropped off. I have attempted to adjust settings and page parameters ... all to no avail.

Documentation on this unit is a joke. Vapor thin at best. I figured out how to install software and hardware myself long before I was able to get anything useful out of documentation or on-line help.

So far, I would rate this unit (MSRP $350.00) as little better than junk. I am about to return it to the seller / manufacturer. If they won't provide me with a full refund or worthwhile support, I will gladly toss this piece of molded plastic into the dumpster (the one outside of my local e-waste collector, that is!)

I've owned this version before but I lost my serial number. Needing to reinstall on my new computer, I was fortunate to find a great deal on a previously owned version. This takes care of all my needs without having to purchase the newer versions with the higher price tags. I don't need all the bells & whistles that the newer versions purport to offer, and I really can't see paying the "premium" prices. WordPerfect Office X5 Pro Top Quality


I'm a long-time WordPerfect user -- from way back in the WP4.2 version for DOS in the late '80s. I even taught WordPerfect classes at the local University back then -- including versions 5.0 and 5.1. WordPerfect has been -- and continues to be -- a superior product than the one offered by MicroSoft.

So why the so-so review (only 3 stars)?

Because it tries to be too much, appealing to MS-Office users and offering everything to everyone ... and no product can ever deliver on such promises.

Too many features. In trying to cover every potential office need, far too many choices are offered. One would wonder how business was conducted before the advent of office computers, let alone the 'Windows' desktops. It suffers from the same problem as the 'other' office suite from MicroSoft -- what they call 'feature bloat'.

Aside from the occasional 'Mail merge' and such necessities as PDF creation or importing dynamic spreadsheet fields into an automated memo, how many of the 'integrated' features do we really need? Nine-times out of ten, documents and presentations are simple things, printed or displayed for the end-reader. The rare time database or spreadsheet data is presented in a memo or slideshow -- nine-times out of ten, again, it's cut-and-pasted from the spreadsheet or database.

Is the integration of 'linked' data fields in the documents really necessary? Do you use it? Do you need it? If that's the case, then your office needs a better 'power' system than an off-the-shelf office suite from WordPerfect, MicroSoft, or even Oracle.

This office suite is overkill. The developers have lost sight of what end-users really need; instead, they offer what they 'think' people need based on what the marketing team at MS-Windows says.

It's like buying an oversized luxury off-road pickup truck for your daily commute: complete overkill for the highway, and an unused prop in the office parking structure. Nice to look at, and the *dream* of it's potential is wonderful -- but a waste unless it's used to its fullest.

I like the WP products; I really do. The 'reveal codes' feature isn't as prominent as it once was, but it's the most important feature I've ever used. But do I really need so many fonts? Do I really need so much clip art? Do I need a second database interface when the corporate IT group links us to the secure servers?

I'd like to see the product stripped-down to its core functionality, and presented in a no-nonsense way to the end-user. There's too much, and it is both confusing and a waste.Get more detail about WordPerfect Office X5 Pro.

Microsoft Word 2010 This instant


I had tried the Beta version but uninstalled that and went back to Word 2002, which I swore by. I decided to try the final release and was pleasantly surprised. I am working on a brand new book, and now I can find reference material with one mouse click. I have had no headaches at all with this fresh release. I am not impressed with the upgraded "find" feature but other than that once you learn how to navigate it is smooth sailing. Even changing template size on a document was easier than before. If there is any drawback to this latest version it is the new file format. Most publishers still ask for doc. files, which means using compatibility mode or saving as a doc file. They do suggest not saving old doc files in the new mode and they are correct. The formatting is ruined when you try that. There are also some new features that you cannot use while working in compatibility mode. I am finding Word 2010 to be quite an improvement over all. Two things I will share from experience. You have to entirely remove the Beta version to install from CD. It is also best to open Word first and then select your old doc file. Microsoft Office 97 Pro Professional Upgrade Buy Now


The only prob I've had with Office 97 is that Publisher 97 cannot do mail merge. Error is:
PUBMERGE Out of Memory.
. . . and then nothing . . . but you can still used Publisher just fine as a publishing program.

I tried many things to get it to work, with no luck.
An MS MVP tried also, with no luck, and concluded this might be due to a security patch, which killed it.

MVP said mail merge with Publisher works in Office 2000, so I'll be upgrading to that, to try it.
I have the stand alone Office 97, so I can get the Office 2000 upgrade, less expensive than 2000 stand alone.

Also, Secunia shows Office 97 as being an insecure program, but I haven't noticed anything.

WordPerfect Office 2000 Professional Edition Upgrade Decide Now


I've read recently that Corel is essentially giving up the fight to win control over the office suite software market. They're apparently acknowledging that Microsoft Office is the _de facto_ standard, and are going to be continuing this product line more or less as a legacy commitment to their installed user base. Future upgrades are to be more and more conversion happy, making sure that your Microsoft Office files can be edited in Corel and then exported back to Microsoft without a hitch.

Some might see this as an unfortunate abdication, but I tend to view it as a smart choice in a changing situation. In the Windows market, they clearly have been beaten by superior advertising and third-party interest in their Microsoft competitor. It is comparatively difficult, for instance, to find many books to help you unlock the full potential of Quattro. It is also hard to find many specialized spreadsheets for Quattro. This stands in stark contrast to the abundance of instructional materials, plug-ins, and function-specific spreadsheets available for Excel.

Happily, this is not the case with Paradox, the included relational database, and Word Perfect. There are more than enough instructional materials around to help you become proficient in these parts of Office 2000. Both have many devoted followers, and you'll have no problem quickly getting up to speed with the largely intuitive programs.

Out-of-the-box usability is thus a mixed bag. Some parts of the package are well documented, some are obscure, but still Corel has the advantage of the superior product. They also have the advantage of having maneuvered themselves as the first Linux office software solution. And it's guaranteed to work well in Linux because Corel have developed their own Linux OS.

Plus, the Corel website is one of the best and most helpful places to be on the net. Try saying that about Microsoft's cumbersome, charge-you-around-every-corner site. When you buy a Corel product, you really do become a part of a family of other users who inhabit the ultra-friendly, ultra-useful Corel.com. Beyond that, though, Corel itself puts tons of instructional materials on its website, so you're likely to find the answers to your questions, if you're willing to do a little digging. Some with slow web connections might find this arrangement unbearable, and will logically choose Microsoft simply because they can find out how to use the software a little easier. This is an important consideration for some people, but I tend to look more for long term usability, rather than ease of initial use.

By choosing to stay in the Windows game by improving their product's portability, and by more aggressively marketing Word Perfect as _the_ Linux solution, Corel is playing a smart waiting game. Since the upgrade version of this software is less than $200 the risk you might take by joining Corel is a negligible one. It's affordable enough to be running alongside Microsoft Office, and it's hedging your bets on Linux' importance over the next decade. This OEM CD of Microsoft Office XP Small Business Edition was a DELL OEM CD provided for DELL Computer. For some reason this software was not installed. This OEM CD of Office XP SBE is new packaged in the original wrapping. I had no problems installing and registering this software with Microsoft. Lowest Price OpenOffice.org 3.x Open Office Suite Software on CD-ROM for Windows (XP, Vista, 7); Latest Stable Release


OpenOffice.org version 3.2 is the latest stable release and by far, the most useful version to date. It's compatible with virtually every office suite out there, including the new Microsoft Office 2007 file formats. Older versions of OpenOffice.org were incompatible with the new file formats, but version 3.2 is now compatible and auto associates all office files upon installation. For those of you who own an older version, buy the latest or download the update and you shouldn't have any more issues with Microsoft Office 2007 compatibility.

On a side note, the WPS file format is a Microsoft Works word processing document, NOT Microsoft Word document, and is still incompatible with OpenOffice.org. The reason for this, is because the WPS format was outdated and replaced by the DOC format. For those of you who are upgrading from Works to ANY office program other than the latest Microsoft Office 2007, be sure to save all of your WPS files into RTF or DOC if available. If you plan to use Corel Home Office to work on your existing Microsoft (MS) Office 2007 (Word or Excel) documents, ya better check which features are used in the existing documents.

Corel Write messes up the logo image in my MS Word (2003) meeting minutes document and does not seem to handle outline numbering very well. There are likely other issues, but I've avoided using Corel Write with existing MS Word documents for the most part due to the compatibility problems on that first try.

Corel Calculate messes up number formats, cell shading colors, etc. in my MS Excel spreadsheets. The method for number entry is also different (e.g., must enter the year when entering dates in Corel Calculate, whereas MS Excel assumes the current year if none is specified).

Otherwise, Corel Home Office is a pretty good basic office suite and does run well on my Netbook (Vista, 2GB RAM).

Cheapest Office Suite 2009


I bought a used lap top just before Christmas 2008 which came with Microsoft Office 2007 and Microsoft works. I had my choice on a new project, and I picked Microsoft Office 2007 to use. As I was using it I discovered that I had only a trial version, and the full version was priced higher than what I paid for the lap top. I printed the 7-page document I had prepared and tried to import it to Microsoft Works, but the trial program blocked the transfer. The Microsoft Works was a full program, as I discovered. Then I went to Google to find a word processor, and the search took me to Amazon.com where I could buy Star Office 7 for $4.99 and office Suite 2009 for $0.01. Realizing that it was only risking $5.00 plus shipping for both of them, I ordered them. The advertisement for Office Suite 2009 said it was compatible with Microsoft Office 2007; so I tried to import the data to Office Suite 2009, but I was blocked again. Then I called in a friend to help me delete the trial version of Microsoft Office 2007. After doing so, my documents files still had the 2 saved Microsoft Office 2007 text files. I decided to click on the larger text file expecting to get an error message stating that it was not attached to a program and couldn't be accessed. What I got was an automatic import to Office Suite 2009. I tried to do the same thing with the smaller Microsoft Office 2007 text file, and the same thing happened again. So I didn't lose any of my work, but realized that the import process from their program to yours was only successful after deleting the trial version. I fell for the hype that Access 2010 was so much better than earlier versions. And I figured I was using a ten-year-old product (Access 2000) so it was about time to upgrade. Well, I bought it and regret it. As is usual for Microsoft, the new features just made things harder and none of the changes I wanted were implemented. The ribbon is just a menu turned on it's side (reminds me of the infamous paperclip). The ability to publish reports from Access to the web is just a marketing scheme from Microsoft to get you to buy Shareport. Synchronization between databases is on it's way out, probably because Microsoft realized that without synchronization developers would have more incentive to move to Shareport. I have never fallen in love with Microsoft Word. I started with the old WordStar, then moved on to WordPerfect for DOS. I have found the functions in WordPerfect, particularly the reveal codes function, to make word processing much easier. Word is fat and slow and the controls require more strokes. Often, you simply can't get done in Word what you can in WordPerfect.

I got this update for my new Windows7 desktop, and it performs perfectly.

I have read the input from the user who upgraded from WordPerfect 8, and I can't respond to those specific complaints, as I have not tried to edit graphics.

WordPerfect Office X5 Standard Decide Now


I don't have a terrible lot of insight into this product as compared to other office suites; I got it with the intention of replacing my freeware word processor, a nicely functional product called AbiWord. Unfortunately, the two programs are entirely incompatible: not only would Corel WP not open my Abi
Word files, it wouldn't even recognize them as copy-paste material. So for me, the product has only limited use. In and of itself, it works quite nicely; I like the suggested word window in the word processor, though not the setup of the rulers and tabs. I'm sure my issues could be addressed with some exploration of the program or its user's manual, which is comprehensive and very easy to use, but I'm just going to stick with my familiar program for word processing, which is my major use of office products. I am very happy to have this Office suite for any presentations or pdf files I want to work with, and I'd recommend it.
